How a Dishwasher Works
A dishwasher is a relatively simple device but is finely calibrated to safely clean a wide range of dishes. When turned on, the water inlet valve allows water into the unit where it is heated to the indicated temperature. The detergent dispenser is automatically opened after a set amount of time and water is sprayed through jets onto the dishes to clean them. There are two spray arms – one at the top of the cabinet and one at the bottom – which work in tandem to remove food particles and clean your dishes.
After a set period of time, dirty water is drained away and the dishes are rinsed with clean water. When the wash cycle is done, your dishwasher has an optional heated dry cycle that warms the air inside the appliance to rapidly dry your dishes.
Dishwasher Problems
Because a dishwasher has so many moving parts and is so finely calibrated, any number of things can go wrong. The heating element can stop working, resulting in cold water and inefficient dry cycles. One or both of the spray arms can stop turning, resulting in poor cleaning and rinsing of the dishes. Other issues include the detergent dispenser getting stuck and the door failing to seal properly.
In some instances, the dishwasher may start to leak, either through the drain–hose/water–inlet assembly or through a bad gasket on the door. For a homeowner that relies on their dishwasher to keep dishes clean, none of these are ideal, which is why it is so important that you call for Gaithersburg appliance repair professional’s assistance as soon as you recognize a potential problem with your dishwasher.
Older dishwashers use anywhere from 10 to 15 gallons of water per wash. Newer models use about half that amount, and the latest energy efficient models can wash an entire load with just three to four gallons. Newer models also have other features that allow them to consume less electricity while providing equal or superior performance over older models. If you have an old dishwasher, you should consider upgrading to a new, high efficiency model. It will consume less energy and water, be better for the environment, and probably make your dishes, glasses, and silverware cleaner.
